SAP Evaluation FAQ for CDL Drivers

Do I have to go in person?
Not necessarily. DOT rules permit remote video evaluations when the SAP’s license allows it and the technology supports real-time audio and video. How remote SAP evaluations work — ask the SAP whether they offer one.
What happens after the evaluation?
The SAP prescribes education or treatment, re-evaluates you when it’s done, and reports to the FMCSA Clearinghouse; then you take an observed return-to-duty test. The full five-step process, with the citations. The slowest step is usually scheduling the RTD test — start arranging it early.
Will my SAP report to the Clearinghouse?
Any DOT-qualified SAP must record your evaluation and program completion in the FMCSA Clearinghouse — that’s what unlocks your return-to-duty test. Confirm the provider handles DOT/FMCSA cases specifically, not just state or clinical assessments.
Can I keep driving while I work through this?
No. Once you are in prohibited status you may not perform any safety-sensitive function, including driving a CMV, until the full return-to-duty process is complete and a negative RTD test is recorded. What prohibited status actually means.
How do I choose between two SAPs?
Three things decide it: whether they take DOT cases specifically, how soon they can see you, and total cost including the follow-up evaluation. Call two and ask all three — the gap in wait time between providers is often weeks, and weeks are what this costs you. What the whole process runs.
Does my employer choose the SAP for me?
Your employer must give you a list of DOT-qualified SAPs, but you are not required to pick from it, and in most cases you pay for the evaluation yourself. You may choose any qualified SAP.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
Your CDL, the test result or refusal notice, your employer’s contact information, and any prior treatment records. Being straight about the violation from the start matters more than anything else you bring — the SAP is evaluating candour as much as history.
What if I already started a program somewhere else?
Bring the documentation. A SAP can sometimes credit completed education or treatment toward your plan, but only the SAP who evaluates you can prescribe and sign off on it. Ask before you pay for anything a second time.
I don’t have an employer — who orders my return-to-duty test?

How much does the evaluation cost?
