Completing return-to-duty does not automatically get your job back — many carriers won't hire a driver with a Clearinghouse violation on file. But plenty will. Second-chance drivers fill open seats at real fleets, and carriers that run strong safety programs know a driver who completed RTD is heavily tested — federal rules require a minimum of 6 unannounced, directly-observed follow-up tests in the first year back (49 CFR §40.307(d)) — arguably the most-verified driver on the road.
What SAP-friendly carriers typically require
- RTD fully complete — negative return-to-duty test on file in the Clearinghouse
- Time since violation (some want 6–12 months)
- Otherwise clean MVR and work history
- Honesty about the violation up front — lying disqualifies you faster than the violation does
How to find these carriers yourself
Straight answer: we do not place drivers, and we have no carrier partners to hand you. If a site tells you it has a pipeline of second-chance seats waiting, ask it to name one carrier before you give it your phone number.
What actually works is direct application. Aim at mid-size fleets, and at refrigerated, flatbed and regional carriers rather than the megacarriers whose insurance underwriting rules out a Clearinghouse violation outright. Say you are RTD-complete in the first sentence rather than letting it surface in the background check. Have the paperwork in hand before you call — your SAP’s completion report and your negative return-to-duty test result — because the recruiter who is willing to consider you still has to prove it to a safety director.
One thing worth knowing before you apply: your follow-up testing plan follows you to a new employer (§40.307), so a carrier hiring you mid-plan is taking on the testing obligation with you. Carriers that do this routinely already know that. Bringing it up yourself reads as competence, not as a problem.
